Full-time: Partick v Dundee
Soccernet.com

Partick left it late before dumping Dundee out of the CIS Insurance Cup with a 1-0 victory.

Thistle secured their place in the last eight thanks to Martin Hardie's goal eight minutes from time as both sides squandered chances in front of goal.

Dundee made the trip to Glasgow in the hope that they could pick up their first away win of the season - but Partick would have been equally keen to claim their first victory at Firhill this term.

Both were guilty of being careless at times and giving possession away needlessly but it was Thistle who enjoyed the best of the chances early on.

The home side came close to opening the scoring after 10 minutes when Hardie met Jamie Buchan's cross from the right flank, but he nodded just wide of the post.

Hardie looked to be Thistle's most dangerous player early on and he forced Dundee goalkeeper Julian Speroni into his first save of the night with a low drive after 18 minutes.

It was 20 minutes before Dundee had their first chance at goal.

Zurab Khizanishvili unleashed the shot but he was denied by the quick reaction of Partick goalkeeper Kenny Arthur, who managed to touch the ball just past the upright.

The visitors had another chance to take the lead three minutes later when Steven Milne's cross picked out Gary Brady but he sent his header wide.

But Dundee almost fell behind in agonising fashion after 25 minutes when a Hardie cross took a deflection off Dave Mackay and Speroni was forced to act quickly to stop the ball hitting the back of the net.

But it was Dundee who almost sneaked the opener five minutes before the break when Juan Sara met Mark Robertson's cross but his header was tipped over the crossbar by Arthur.

Partick wasted no time in attacking the Dundee goal after the break and they could have been ahead just three minutes after the restart.

Hardie released Alex Burns down the right wing and he tried to square the ball across the face of goal to the waiting Jamie Mitchell but Speroni managed to intercept and scoop the ball to safety.

Dundee had a half-hearted penalty claim turned down a minute later when they insisted a Brady ball had been handled by Derek Whyte.

But the former Aberdeen defender looked to have controlled the ball with his chest and referee Stuart Dougal ordered play to continue.

Partick continued to push forward and they must have thought they had taken the lead after 57 minutes.

David Lilley produced a fine volley from Alan Archibald's corner, and the ball looked destined to hit the back of the net but Brady somehow managed to hook the ball clear off the line.

At the other end of the park, Dundee were still trying to break the deadlock but a Sara header was easily held by Arthur.

Partick goalkeeper Arthur became the first player of the evening to be cautioned when referee Dougal ruled he had handled the ball outside the area after 77 minutes under pressure from Lee Wilkie.

Dundee were given a free-kick right on the edge of the 18-yard box but the opportunity was wasted when he sent the shot over the crossbar.

But the breakthrough eventually came with eight minutes remaining - and it was in Partick's favour.

Hardie had been impressive throughout most of the game and he played the ball to Archibald just outside the area, while making his own run into the box. Archibald fed the ball into Hardie's path and he handed Thistle the lead when he slotted home past the helpless Speroni.
