Full-time: Motherwell 1 - 0 St Johnstone
Soccernet.com

Motherwell clocked up their third league win over St Johnstone but it was not a satisfactory performance from either side.

Motherwell have been forced to give youth a chance in the aftermath of an exodus of big-money stars and they responded to the challenge.

Well looked the side more likely to score in the first half and deservedly went in at half-time holding a one-goal lead.

That match-winning goal came in 24 minutes when Said Chib floated over an inch-perfect corner and Northern Ireland international Stuart Elliott nipped in at the near post to send a powerful header into the roof of the net.

St Johnstone had a glorious chance to haul themselves level in 68 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Greg Strong handled a net-bound effort from Nathan Lowndes. Momo Sylla struck the kick cleanly but keeper Stevie Woods guessed correctly and palmed the ball round the post.

Between these goal threats there were several half chances, mainly from the home side, but neither set of forwards could convert them into goals.

Steve Nicholas was sent through early on Twaddle then Elliott but his slight frame was easily nudged off the ball by Alan Kernaghan.

The speed of Elliott was causing his young marker Ross Forsyth some concern early on but as the young defender stepped up his game Elliott adopted a more roving commission to create havoc in other areas.

Sylla, playing just behind Lowndes had the keenest eye for goal in the same side and twice in the first half he flashed shots just wide of goal and then three minutes before the penalty sent a dipping chip inches over the bar.

Nic Dasovic had two useful efforts in rapid succession early in the second half as Saints gave indication of stepping up their game but unfortunately was just out with his final effort.

At the other end Kevin Twaddle carried a threat in his long busting runs but too often found no takers in the goal area to connect with the crosses.

Both managers pitched on a number of youngsters for the final half-hour to give them a taste of top team football and of the new recruits Keith Lasley looked among the more promising although James McFadden split the Saints defence only to be halted by a timely tackle from Jim Weir.
