A fourth-minute penalty from new boy Owen Coyle gave new boss Ian McCall a 1-0 win over Clyde.
Coyle, signed from Dunfermline, enjoyed hero status at Airdrie during the 1990s and he quickly re-established himself in supporters' affections by sending Clyde goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell the wrong way from the penalty spot.
However, the penalty incident dealt a double blow to Clyde who had Andy Millen shown a red card for his handball on the goal-line.
Down to 10 men, Clyde fought bravely to get back in the game and substitute Leigh Hinds' late volley grazed a post as the visitors threatened to spoil Airdrie's day.
Airdrie should have increased their lead as Clyde tired, but Coyle wasted their best chance of the second half by blazing over the crossbar from 14 yards.
