Hamilton edged out East Fife in a poor game with a penalty five minutes from the end giving them all three points in a 2-1 victory.
The Accies took the lead after 52 minutes when Stuart Callagan's free-kick was expertly headed home by Paul Gaughan.
East Fife levelled the match in controversial circumstances when a low cross reared up off Robert Prytz's foot and hit his hand on 56 minutes.
John Gallagher converted the kick.
A draw looked likely until Richard Gibb handled a cross ball in the box.
Callagan blasted home the winner.
