Nine-man Berwick were left furious as they made their debut in the Second Division with a 1-0 defeat at Queen's Park.
The newly-promoted side were up against it as soon as they lost midfielder Gordon Forrest. He was red-carded just four minutes from the interval.
And then two minutes into the second half they again saw red when defender Alan Neil, who had been booked earlier, was sent off for a second yellow when he kicked the ball away.
And just a minute after that the Spiders were punished their nine-man opponents with the only goal of the game. Young full-back Steve Marshall came forward to meet a corner from the right and sweep the ball into the net.
Berwick, who had promised much earlier, continued to fight but it was a rearguard action and they had to thank keeper Mark McLean that Queens, who had unfurled their Third Division championship flag before the kick-off, did not move further ahead.
McLean touched over a fierce Kevin Finlayson shot in 68 minutes and then defied Frankie Carroll near the end.
