By Dominic Raynor

World Football's governing body, FIFA, are set to introduce a special armband that will be worn by the most-capped international still playing for his country, currently Egypt's Hossam Hassan.

World record holder Hassan overtook Germany's now retired libero Lother Matthaeus, 150 caps, in January when he won his 151st cap in a friendly against Zambia.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter will present Hassan with a souvenir medal, a diploma and the armband on Sunday in Cairo at the laying of the foundation stone for the new African Football Confederation headquarters.

A FIFA statement said: 'This armband will be worn henceforth to indicate the still active national team player who holds the world record in international appearances.'

Unfortunately the 34-year-old striker is set to miss Egypt's vital World Cup qualifier against Senegal on May 4th after suffering an injury to his right leg while playing for his Egyptian club Zamalek.

Hassan made his debut for Egypt 15 years ago against Norway in Oslo, and since then he has achieved a number of international successes including the African Cup of Nations in 1986 and 98, the Arab Cup in 1992 and an All Africa Games' Gold Medal in 1987.

The striker also represented his country at the 1990 World Cup in Italy

The veteran's amazing exploits continue at club level, where he recently won the African Cup Winners Cup with Zamalek.

Hassan and his twin brother caused uproar when they switched allegiances from fierce Cairo rivals Al-Ahly at the start of the season, but two goals on his Zamalek debut did much to silence the boo boys.

And the Egyptian has helped Zamalek go to top of the league table with an eight-point lead over Al-Ahly.

Hassan will get to test his skills against some of the best players in club football when Zamalek travel to Spain to take part in this year's 16-team World Club Championship which starts on July 29.

Hassan has had stints with AEK in Greece, Newchatle in Switzerland and El-Ain of the United Arab Emirates, but has been most successful during his 21-year spell with Al-Ahly.

The striker won ten Egyptian League titles, four Egyptian Cups, the African Cup Winners' Cup twice, an Afro-Asian cup and four Arab titles and while at the Cairo club.
