PSV coach sees side as transfer targets after Leeds win

LEEDS, England, Feb 28 (Reuters) - PSV Eindhoven coach Eric Gerets insisted his impressive team could become transfer targets for the whole of Europe after beating Leeds United 1-0 in the Uefa Cup.

Internationals Marc van Bommel and Kevin Hofland are already being eyed by top English clubs Arsenal and Manchester United, and could follow the likes of Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy to Europe's top clubs.

The PSV duo showed their worth as the Dutch champions outclassed Leeds before Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored a dramatic last minute winner.

'I know people are watching stars like van Bommel and if my players continue to play the way they did this evening maybe I will lose ten players,' he said.

'We deserved the goal and the win, as although Leeds were strong in the first half, they tired and we got more space and used it so well.

'The players were able to give a good fight to Leeds. What surprised me in the last 15 minutes was that the physical condition of our team was better than that of Leeds.'

Gerets joked that his president was happy with the fact PSV now face Feyenoord in the next round, as it would save the club the expense of a trip to Scotland to play Rangers (who lost to the Dutch side 4-3 on aggregate), but he predicted a close tie.

'We are not much better than Feyenoord, but they are not much better than us,' he said.

'We proved in the Dutch cup that we were a little bit better, but then in the Championship we played away and did not win.

'The important thing will be who has the best form, who has the fresher players and who is injured.'

Leeds boss David O'Leary challenged his side to bounce back after their ninth game without a win ended their chances of winning any silverware this season.

'I would like to wish PSV well. We played well in the first half and didn't score. It sums up our season for us, with conceding a late goal,' he said.

'We have to be big and strong and see what the rest of the season brings us. Only time will tell how we will finish.

'There are 33 points there and we have to get back into the Champions League or this competition for next season. Losing is a big disappointment, you can see it in the dressing room, particularly as a goal was conceded right at the end.

'I thought it was going into extra time and possibly penalties, so it's a big blow for us. The two teams were matched up well but their players were better than us in the second half.

'I felt they were the stronger team in the second half. We chased the ball too much and they got control of the midfield with van Bommel looking impressive, and we didn't control the play.'
