BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Anghel Iordanescu is free to become coach of Romania's national team after his club Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates agreed to release him, the Romanian soccer federation's president said.
'Iordanescu is 99 percent the new Romania national team coach,' Mircea Sandu told Romanian television late on Sunday. 'He will probably start his new job on January 10.'
Iordanescu returns for a second spell after leading Romania to the 1994 World Cup quarter-finals in his first term from 1993-1998.
He replaces Gheorghe Hagi, who resigned last month after six months in the job following Romania's failure to qualify for next year's World Cup.
Romania will face world and European champions France in a friendly in Paris on February 13.
