FLORENCE, Italy, April 5 (Reuters) - Fiorentina have fined goalkeeper Francesco Toldo after he claimed the Italian Serie A club had put him up for sale.
Toldo was widely quoted on Wednesday as saying club
vice-president Mario Sconcerti had told him he would be sold at
the end of this season.
'I read that I had promised to let Toldo go,' Sconcerti
said.
'I had spoken with him but that is not what I said.'
Sconcerti said there was a debate within the club about the
future of the Italian international.
'For our president Vittorio Cecchi Gori, Toldo is not for
sale,' he said. 'I think differently and would enter negotations
if it was for the advantage of Fiorentina. I called Toldo, he
apologised to me and I told him that the club had fined him.'
Toldo has been linked with league leaders AS Roma and
champions Lazio as well as Spanish club Barcelona.
Sconcerti told the daily Gazzetta dello Sport that the club
had been approached by Barcelona but had not replied to the
offer because of Toldo's wish to stay in Italy and Cecchi Gori's
desire to keep him.
Fiorentina said in a statement that Toldo had been fined 50
million lire ($23,250).
' It is inopportune at this difficult stage of the season
for a player to reveal publicly his intentions in the transfer
market,' the statement said.
'The club, coach, squad and fans
deserve more respect and the common interest should always
prevail over that of the individual'.
