LONDON, Feb 12 (Reuters) - UEFA has no interest in establishing a super league of the major European clubs, the chief executive of Europe's ruling body Gerhard Aigner has said.
'We have no interest in creating a super league,' Aigner said on BBC radio. 'We know that the daily bread of the clubs is the national leagues.
'That's where the strength lies. We do not want to compete with the national leagues. We feel that we are responsible for the development of football in Europe - that means we have a responsibility towards the public.
'We want to make sure that the fans can watch the football they want to and we can't construct an artificial construction which is detached from the basis.'
Asked if a super league would ever be formed, Aigner replied: 'If the fans indicate they want it. For the time being I don't see such indications.'
Aigner also expressed scepticism about proposals for an Atlantic league of 13 clubs from six countries who are concerned that they are being sidelined because of the small domestic markets in which they operate.
'I wonder if it will be great for the fans,' he said.
