ROTTERDAM, June 25 (Reuters) - Turkish defender Alpay Ozalan
was suspended for three games on Sunday after being sent off in
his country's 2-0 defeat by Portugal in the Euro 2000
quarter-finals.
The ban was announced by UEFA after a meeting of its
disciplinary committee.
Alpay was dismissed after striking out at Portugal's
Fernando Couto in retaliation after they clashed and fell to the
ground in Saturday's match.
UEFA also suspended Romanian veteran midfielder Gheorghe
Hagi for one game after he was dismissed for a second bookable
offence in Romania's 2-0 quarter-final defeat by Italy, also on
Saturday.
UEFA handed the Turkish national federation a fine of £4,500 as a result of players' and supporters'
behaviour during the match against Portugal in Amsterdam.
'The control and disciplinary body noted that Turkish
supporters set off firecrackers in the 53rd, 56th and 58th
minutes of the match,' UEFA said.
The Turkish team also had
three players cautioned in addition to the sending-off.
Portugal have to pay a fine of around £2,000
as a result of the five cautions shown to their players during
the game and the setting off a a smoke bomb by their fans.
The Italian federation was fined around £1,000
because their supporters lit four flares during the victory over
the Romanians in Brussels.
