Fans slam UEFA stance
By Chris Borg

Fans group The Football Supporters' Association has called on UEFA to lift its threat to ban England from Euro 2000 after violent clashes followed Turkey's victory over Belgium.

The FSA said the trouble - which saw Turkish supporters clash with riot police in Brussels - highlighted what it called the 'stupidity' of UEFA's threat.

And the FSA's Alison Pilling added: 'The events of last night prove the stupidity of the UEFA decision.

'By the same logic, they should now throw Turkey out - which is ridiculous. Football teams cannot be held responsible for the actions of fans away from the ground.'

The FSA's call comes as police and security officers step up their crackdown ahead of England's match against Romania in Charleroi. Home Secretary Jack Straw has declared that immigration and police checks at ports have been stepped up in a bid to prevent thugs from reaching the game.
