Alf-Inge Haaland
Club: Manchester City
Shirt Number: 15
Position: Defender
Date of Birth: November 23, 1972
Birthplace: Stavanger, Norway
Height: 5'10"

Profile:

A £2.5million signing from Leeds United in the summer of 2000, Haaland is a versatile and strong player who can play in a variety of positions. Soon made club captain and a favourite with the fans, he has demonstrated an uncompromising style since arriving at Maine Road.

Made his name with Nottingham Forest after signing from his hometown club, Norwegian minnows Bryne (who have produced more than their fair share of talent over the years). His talents were spotted by George Graham who then took him to Leeds.

Was a regular in the team until David O'Leary took over and was forced out of the reckoning by the new boss' favouring of young guns like Jonathan Woodgate in defence and Stephen McPhail and Matthew Jones in midfield.

Played for Norway on many occasions, though he missed the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Had a high profile on-pitch bust up with Manchester United skipper Roy Keane during the 2000/01 derby match. Keane's cruel challenge could have ended Haaland's career - and Keane was accused of getting revenge for a challenge that ended his 1997/98 campaign by Haaland.

The player was forced to undergo a knee operation right at the end of that season, which forced him to miss much of the 2001/02 championship challenge. Came back in December, but managed only four games from the substitutes bench.

It was clear all was not right and City sent Haaland to the USA to see a specialist in a bid to get him for the 2002/03 Premiership return.
