Position: Defender
Date of Birth: September 18, 1974
Birthplace: Newham
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 14.1

Profile:

Former Tottenham Hotspur skipper Campbell has carved a deserved reputation as one of England's most commanding centre halves, boasting impeccable tackling skills and huge strength on the ball.

Capable of keeping even the most feared strikers quiet, his game is let down slightly by erratic distribution - something which manifested itself strongly as England lost to Portugal in Euro 2000.

Made his England debut in against Hungary in May 1996 and has become a virtual regular in the national side. Had one of his best ever games against Argentina in World Cup 98 and scored 10-man England's disallowed goal that could have sent them through to the quarter-finals.

Selected on every available occasion by Kevin Keegan and then played in England's 3-0 friendly victory over Spain, Eriksson's first game in charge, in February and was one of the few players to play the whole 90 minutes.

Eriksson made him captain in the second-half following the substitution of David Beckham.

It was his booming voice that gave some order to a pressurised England defence as they clung on against Finland, in March, to win 2-1 in a vital World Cup qualifier.

Sensationally left Spurs in the summer of 2001 to join deadly rivals Arsenal on a Bosman free transfer.

The move provoked death threats from some irate Tottenham fans and provoked the media to question his motives when he pulled out of the England squad for a friendly against Holland at White Hart Lane - Spurs' home ground.

Started slowly with Arsenal, but as the season progressed Campbell grew in stature and regained the form which had won him plaudits in the past. Picked up a Championship and FA Cup winners' medal in his first season with the Gunners.

Was one of the first names on the teamsheet for England at the 2002 World Cup as England reached the quarter-final, scoring his side's opening goal of the tournament against Sweden.

FIFA then named Campbell in their team of the tournament - even though many saw Rio Ferdinand as the better half of the central defensive partnership.
