Merson had to pull out of the club's InterToto Cup opener with FC Zurich in July 2002 after admitting he had not followed a fitness programme for the summer.
Taylor insisted he had no problem with the London-born midfielder, but even Merson admits he is likely to have to find a new club when his contract expires in the summer of 2003.
He had played 144 games for Villa, scoring 19 goals, by the summer of 2002.
