Erik Meijer
Club: Hamburg
Shirt Number:
Position: Defender
Date of Birth: August 2, 1969
Birthplace: Meerssen, Holland
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 13.5

Profile:

Signed for the Liverpool in January 1999 under a Bosman ruling pre-contract agreement, having been a boyhood Liverpool fan.

A Dutch striker of German nationality, Meijer's powerful forward play was sought to give Liverpool an attacking aerial presence.

Meijer has proven himself to be a constant menace to opposing defences with his robust style, though goalscoring tends to be lacking from his game, a facet which meant the likes of Heskey, Fowler and Owen were chosen ahead of him.

Unable to get first team football, he was loaned out to First Division surprise package Preston North End in October 2000. Started nine games without getting on the scoresheet.

The player pulled the plug on the loan deal when he heard German club Hamburg were interested in him. He joined them on a free transfer in December 2000.

Meijer said of the move: 'I did not have to think long about the move once I got the call.'
