Watford have signed Wayne Brown on a two-and-a-half year contract after a member of the board agreed to fund his wages for the first six months.
The 25-year-old defender spent a successful loan spell at Vicarage Road last
season and was recently given a free transfer by Ipswich.
Watford manager Ray Lewington had claimed there was no money for transfers,
but the club can afford to pay Brown's wages when the first six months of his
contract are up.
Lewington said: 'He impressed a lot of people when he was here at Watford.
'He is very versatile, and these days to have a left-footed player who can
play in a variety of positions is priceless,'' he told the official club
website.
