Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has tested positive for the Class A drug cocaine, according to Sunday newspaper reports.
The reports allege that the London club were informed of the test results a few days ago.
They say a B sample from the former Aston Villa and Manchester United player has yet to be analysed.
If it confirms the drug's presence, the FA could impose a lengthy ban and order Bosnich to undergo a programme of rehabilitation.
A positive result could also open the way for Chelsea to cancel the player's £40,000-per-week contract. He has made only a handful of appearances for the Stamford Bridge club.
FA officials have refused to confirm or deny whether a test has been carried out on the 30-year-old, with a spokesman saying: 'We do not discuss anything to do with the FA's drug-testing programme.'
If the finding is confirmed, Bosnich will become the most high-profile Premier League player to test positive for drugs.
