Sven-Goran Eriksson admitted he has bowed to the wishes of the clubs in revamping his medical staff and appointing a new England team doctor in Leif Sward.
Eriksson has disposed of doctors John Crane and Tim Sonnex, both of whom also
did work with Arsenal, long-time physio Alan Smith in addition to Richard Smith,
who worked with the squad during the World Cup finals.
The England coach revealed some clubs felt it unsatisfactory for particular
staff to combine roles with their domestic side and the national team. But he
has nevertheless retained the services of Arsenal physio Gary Lewin.
Eriksson has been acquainted for many years with Sward, who had previously
worked with IFK Gothenburg and the Swedish Under-21 side.
Eriksson said: 'We need to change the doctor and the only reason for that is
some of the clubs were thinking it was a little bit too much for people to also
work with the national team and I understand that.
'That's why now we have an independent doctor now which no-one can accuse of
working for Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Middlesbrough or whoever.
'That's the only reason we changed that position. It could help us to have
better relationships with the clubs in the future.
'You could feel the vibrations sometimes (from the clubs) and it is important
to do this. I am talking in general terms and not about any one club. Maybe it
is fair as well.
'The doctors know all about the tests and things like that that players have,
confidential things, and if that information comes from someone not belonging to
any club then I think it is better.'
Eriksson added: 'I have known Leif Sward for many years and he is surgeon who
operates every day on sports injuries and is considered to be a top man in his
profession.'
