Batson: UEFA must act over racism

Brendon Batson has urged UEFA to clamp down on clubs whose fans racially abuse visiting players.

Professional Footballers' Association official Batson spoke out after Manchester United star Andy Cole was subjected to racist Players' abuse in yesterday's (Wednesday) Champions League clash at Valencia.

Batson is alarmed at the scale of the problem throughout Europe - and says the game's governing bodies must act to improve the situation.

He added: 'It is disturbing to see the level of racist chanting in European games, and it is a huge embarrassment to UEFA.

'The national association should support their clubs when players like Andy Cole and Patrick Vieira are being abused abroad.

'UEFA banned a Lazio player earlier this season for racism, but action should also be taken against individual clubs and, if necessary, bans imposed.'
