Striking dilemma for Crewe before Preston visit
Crewe boss Dario Gradi faces a striker dilemma for the visit of Preston to Gresty Road.
Teenage sensation Dean Ashton made his long-awaited return from injury as a substitute in the 3-2 Worthington Cup defeat by Ipswich.
Now Gradi must decide whether to throw him straight into the starting line-up against last season's beaten play-off finalists.
Rodney Jack and four-goal top scorer Rob Hulse have been deputising in Ashton's absence.
Defender David Wright (thigh strain) is unlikely to be involved so Stephen Foster is once again expected to play.
Gradi said: "Preston are a very good side who have two of the most prolific strikers in the division.
"I was surprised by how well they did last year but not surprised by their start this year as teams have got to know them."
Preston boss David Moyes has a fully-fit squad to choose from as his side get back in action after a two-week break.
North End have turned their season around after a poor start and will be looking for their third win in four games against the Railwaymen.
David Healy and transfer-listed Jon Macken should start up front, though Steve Basham is fit again after recovering from tendinitis in his shin.
Veteran striker Kevin Gallacher has also recovered from a hamstring injury.
