Torquay finally ended their six match losing run and hauled fellow strugglers Carlisle into relegation trouble after a 4-2 win.
Twice Carlisle equalised after Torquay had taken the lead through a Mark Ford penalty in the sixth minute and a sweet Paul Holmes free-kick in the 19th.
Carl Heggs levelled from the spot after he had been fouled by Torquay player-coach Alex Watson in the 14th minute and Richard Tracey headed them level again three minutes into the second half.
But a series of brilliant saves by young goalkeeper Ryan Northmore snuffed out Carlisle's revival.
Goals by Steve Tully in the 56th minute and an 81st minute volley by midfielder Kevin Hill, his fifth goal of the season, clinched a precious victory for Torquay.
