Rosenborg 1 - 2 Porto: Skill show
Soccernet.com

TRONDHEIM, Norway, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Porto took some revenge against Rosenborg Trondheim with a 2-1 win in a Champions League group E match dominated by the skilful Portuguese side on Tuesday.

Porto, avenging a defeat by the Norwegian side in 1998, played impressive one-touch football and showed their technical superiority over Rosenborg who struggled to get into the match.

After just 10 minutes a Porto counter-attack ended with Brazilian striker Jesus Pena running through a jittery defence to slot the ball confidently past goalkeeper Arni Arason.

Porto extended their lead in the 59th minute when another Brazilian, playmaker Deco Sousa, rose unchallenged to head home from five metres.

Rosenborg battled to get back into the match and were finally rewarded with a headed goal from striker Sigurd Rushfeldt just before the final whistle.

On a slippery surface at the Lerkendal stadium, Porto's charismatic coach Octavio Machado was relieved to make his first Champions League match of the season a successful one.

'It was great to win at Lerkendal,' Machado said. 'It was a tough match and Rosenborg were worthy opponents.'

Rosenborg coach Nils Arne Eggen felt his team had struggled to keep up with Porto's fast-paced game.

'Especially in the central midfield, we had trouble. We were too slow in the duels,' Eggen said. 'We lost 2-1 at home and that is a poor performance.'

It was the third time the teams had played each other in the Champions League group phase.

In 1997, the Portugese club won 1-0 away and 3-0 at home, but Rosenborg turned the tables the following year by winning 2-0 in Norway and drawing 1-1 at Antas stadium in Oporto.
